The top rated entry level SLRs are Nikon’s D40, D60 and D80 and Canon’s Xti and XSi.
The best thing to do it trying them all in a store, you’ll know which one YOU like best. Personally I like them all, but leaning somewhat to the Canon XSi. But it’s a matter of what you like and what you want to spend on a camera.
The D40 is the least expensive and still a favorite for a starter DSLR.
You know, I could go into a huge answer, but what matters is it comes down to personal preference.
Basically, you cannot go wrong with either. Check out the specs for some of the entry level dSLRs, like the Nikon D40, D40x, or D60 or the Canon XTi, XSi, or soon available XS. Check out websites like cnet.com and dpreview.com and read up on the cameras in magazines (Popular Photography’s August issue has a large piece on new dSLRs, it has both the XSi and the Nikon D60).
Get a camera based on your needs. What you’ll be shooting should dictate what kind of cameras & lenses you buy. Also remember that you aren’t pigeonholed into Canon or Nikon. Many people shoot with Pentax, Olympus, or Sony!
Be sure to go into a camera store and hold the cameras, look at their menus, etc. etc.

Go with which one feels better in your hands, be a minimalist, its not the camera that gets the great shot its you. I’ve shot with all the low level Nikons and Canons, they are so similar. The only pro about canon entry level is you can mount all there EF and EF-S line of lenses on them, and Nikon entry levels can only autofocus with DX lenses, which leaves plenty of other company’s like Sigma and Tamron out of the question.
One piece of advice, don’t listen to Ken Rockwell. His photography is beige and his reviews are bias. Use http://www.dpreview.com to make a judgment, not Ken Rockwell.
The nikon D60 and D40 are great. I used to own a D80 which I love, but don’t let being a beginner scare you from a better SLR camera. I would promote getting a D50 over a D40, but the D40 is lighter I believe if that is your main concern. It depends on the first camera you are gonna buy. If you get canon first nikon will be so strange and vice versa.
From my personal experience (not so big exp, just with my friends camera and mine) i found my Nikon is farbetter than the canon XSi and Xti. I use a Nikon D60.
I have a great Nikon D40 that is perfect for the beginner and is very easy to get used to. You might want to try the Nikon D60 for a few more capabilities like more megapixels and other features. Also, the D60 is a little newer than the D40.

The Nikon D40 (and the D40X) will take good pictures and they are lightweight, but they are very limited in the lenses they can use. Most Nikon autofocus lenses will not work on them, because the coupling to the lens must be entirely electronic.

IMO Epson is the best inkjet printers for professional looking photos. The prints come out sharper and less grainy than HP printers. If you can afford it, get one that can print the wide format 13" size prints. If you're serious about printing your own photos, sometimes it's nice to print large prints and not be confined to 8 1/2 x 11.
Plus Epson has a variety of papers including archival paper that's supposed to last longer. Don't go for all in one of anything (electronics, tv-vcr combos, printer-fax-copier, etc.) If one part of the all in one goes bad, it affects everything else.
As far as scanners, I have an Epson scanner, but really don't do too much scanning anymore.
I think that’s entirely fair – and a good example of why these sorts of terms create real costs and barriers that can actually reduce the potential of companies to make money.

If you can pay a bit more than $1000 I would suggest Nikon D90 with is a great semi-pro level camera,

I bought a Pentax Optio W10 because it has a cool time lapse mode, but it also happens to be waterproof. I went to a big spring in Alabama and took some underwater pictures there. They came out beautiful.

It's a toss up. Canon has wonderful, dependable products. I love my H/P, its refurbished, like new, and does everything I want to do photographically. Look at them.
I can’t remember the last time I saw a store that sold mostly music CDs. Where do they even exist? Are there any more big box music stores? The Tower Records near us that opened in 2002ish closed a couple of years ago. I’m not saying they’ll all be gone, but more than half the ones existing today will be closed by this time 2015.

Some of the photography magazines test cameras, and then report on them. They have the equipment to do very thorough testing. I'm sure you don't have that kind of equipment to do that kind of testing.

It depends on what "35mm film camera" you have. If you have an old Canon FD-mount camera (which means Canon's manual focus cameras made before the 90s) you'll need an adapter:
If you have an EOS 35mm camera with EF-mount lenses then they should mount and work exactly like they're suppose to.
In any case, since the sensor of the XTi is smaller than a frame of film, there's a 1.6x crop factor that you have to take into account. A 28-80mm lens would be equivalent to a 44.8-128mm lens on the XTi.

1) if you were outdoors, the cold temperatures will sap the power of the batteries. Once they warm up, they regain their power (cold temps reduce the chemical reactions that produce electricity).
2) if you still have problems once your batteries are warmed up, then the issue may be your charger, high internal resistance in the batteries, or both.
3) the best rechargeable AA batteries are Sanyo Eneloops or other similar "pre-charged" rechargeables. They have lower internal resistance and will last much longer in high-drain devices than normal NiMH rechargeables.
Based on your description, I'd bet that it was the cold weather coupled with a lot of LCD use that killed your batteries within an hour.

Canon XTI, it will drop in price when the XSI comes out. Even a used 10d, 20d, or 30d will be great. Lenses and accessories are another story!
