What is the best slr digital camera at an affordable price?

Im interested in buying a slr camera but not sure which is the best buy? What brand is the best...nikon, cannon, sony? I would mostly be using it to take pictures of my sons so im looking for one thats a reasonable price. Thanks in advance for your responses.

The best Nikon going is the D90, for price to features. The D5000 has the same sensor, but not as many options. The D90 is around 750.00, body only. The New D7000 just came out, so the price on the D90 will probably be dropping. Wait a bit, and look for a deal on it.
Canon and Sony have the same quality as Nikon. See what you like, and what feels better.
I personally rock a Nikon D90, I’m a nature/landscape/macro photographer and love this camera, but its the lenses that really make a camera. If you wana good camera for sports photography for for a cannon, but I really like my D90, if you dont wana fork over 700 for the body and another 600 for a decent lens, go for like a D40…

Define ‘reasonable’ and ‘affordable’, please.
It depends: if you are decided to keep photography only as a weekend hobby than Nikon D3100 should be enough for you . If you want to evolute in time , than you should choose between D90 and D7000 . I would personally choose D7000 if the budget allows it . Don’t forget that the lenses are more important than the body . Keep that in mind . A good body is useless without some good lenses .
With a DSLR your buying into a system the most expensive systems are Canon and Nikon, the least expensive system is Pentax by far, image stabilisation built into the camera so every lens you fit is image stabilised. Canikons charge extra on every lens for this. Backwards compatible with any K mount lens, that’s any Pentax lens made since 1973, there are hundreds of them available cheaply.
Not all Canikons have all the functions at entry level (bracketing for instance), Pentax has them all including some which are only available on a Pentax.
With Canon particularly you are buying old technology the new Sony sensor in the Pentax Kr leaves them standing for Dynamic range (fewer burnt out skies), and low light performance up to an ISO of 25800, at that level you can take a picture when it’s too dark for you to see clearly.

You are asking Photographers what is the best camera – you do realize that is a very foolish thing to do? They will simply tell you theirs is the best. Look at the answers people have given here already. Photographers are crazy in the head!!! – they don’t see the world in common sense colours – they’re too busy admiring and showing off their equipment.
The best starting point is to go visit http://www.dpreview.com – then go visit a camera store, and try and get your hands physically on a camera you like. It’s what you like and feel comfortable with that is important when choosing a camera. When it comes to affordability, you might want to consider second hand equipment. Photographers are always selling off stuff they consider “too old”, wanting to upgrade to the next best thing.
I prefer canon, but nikon is a good brand too..neither if really better, its just a personal preference. Go to a camera store and try out cameras before you actally make the decision to buy one and make sure you like the way it feels in your hands and all that. And I reccomend buying refurbished. I bought a refurbished one on adorama.com (as did some other people I know) and I couldn’t be happier. Its a great camera and it came without even a scratch on it…I couldn’t even tell it had been used before (prob just as a display camera) and they have to pass certain standards, so they are in great condition…and you save a lot of money! I probably saves about $400 on kine by buying refurbished instead of brand new.
There is no such thing, but there are quite a few good ones at an affordable price.
