I love my Nikon D60. Bought it on special last Christmas with two lenses for about $550. It’s considered an entry level DSLR, but even with two intro DVDs and an instruction book, I’ll never learn all that this camera does! Amazing.
You can go to the library or perhaps look online at the most recent Consumer Reports article and ratings about digital cameras. Their information is straightforward and always good.
Have fun.
as beeing in the same shoe you r in now,,,, i found Nikon d40x is my best easy to learn and begin with …… so i guess going to nikon
D60x or
D90x is your best hit check amazon.com for better bargin
Nikon Vs. Canon like the 100 years war it will never end. every team stick with thear own views …. but once you get one you’ll stick with the brand cuz lens come for a brand can’t be switch
goodluck
$700 is more than enough to get you a great dSLR from Canon, Nikon and Pentax. They are the top brands in dSLRs today.
canon 450d
For under $700 I would suggest Canon Digital Rebel XSi 12.2 MP with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens.It take great picture quality

All the entry level are quite good. Go to http://dpreview.com and compare the different entry level cameras, side by side.. read the reviews and study the sample photos. Then when you have narrowed your choices down, go to a camera store, and handle the different models that you are interested in,and get a feel for them… try them with different lenses, and buy the one which feels right in your hands.
Just because one person likes Canon and another likes Nikon, does not mean either will be right for you, the right one is the one which you will feel comfortable with.
Pentax K-x, it’s the only Digital SLR under 700 that can record HD videos, and it produces the highest iso range and the best high iso IQ in it’s price range. Equipped with a 12MP Sony CMOS sensor, the same one used in the new a500. Goes up to 12,800 ISO. It’s also the most compact in it’s entire class range.
